The league was created to challenge the National Football League (NFL). The USFL played a spring football season from February to May. It then had a break for almost five months before playing a fall season from September to December. Each team played fourteen games in the regular season, split equally between home and away games.
The USFL had eighteen teams in its final two seasons: nine each in 1984 and 1985. Most of the teams were located in the eastern and southeastern United States, with one team west of the Mississippi River (the Arizona Wranglers) and two teams in Canada (the Birmingham Stallions and the Memphis Showboats).

Quarterback Mike Taliaferro passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Birmingham Stallions defeated the Tampa Bay Bandits, 31-21, at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Taliaferro completed 16 of 26 passes for 256 yards and also rushed for 36 yards on six carries. Running back Craig James rushed for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass from Taliaferro as well. Wide receiver Jerry Butler caught five passes for 103 yards and a touchdown for Birmingham. For Tampa Bay, quarterback Steve Young threw two touchdown passes and running back Gary Anderson rushed for a touchdown.

-The “Miracle at Meadowlands” when Herschel Walker ran for a game-winning touchdown as time expired to give the New Jersey Generals a 28-27 come-from-behind victory over the Philadelphia Stars.
-Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary pass to Gerard Phelan that gave the Boston Breakers a 24-22 win over the New Jersey Generals in 1984.
-The “Battle of Alabama” between the Birmingham Stallions and Memphis Showboats in 1985 which featured a bench-clearing brawl and ended with both teams being disqualified.
